Driving to the picturesque village of Piodão is a scenic adventure full of hairpin bends and narrow roads that snake through the mountains. On clear days, the views are spectacular. The terraced fields and stone walls of low-lying arable land contrast with the barren heights of the Serra do Açor.

I was in awe of the schist buildings (the type of rock that many of the homes here are built out of) built right into the mountainside. See the map above. I marked the location of Piodao on it. At first glance, it seems that this small village has a very favorable location. In the middle of Portugal, about 90 km in a straight line from the coast and 50 km from Coimbra, the capital of the region. However, the first impression is very misleading.

Piódão is one of Portugal's 12 historic villages, but also one of Portugal's schist villages. It was the winner of the remote villages category for the 7 wonders of Portugal and is located in the Açor mountain range. Its characteristic blue windows and doors contrast so much with the color of the schist and make it so instagrammable.

Piódão has been historically famous since the XIV century.

The picturesque little village of Piodão clings to a steeply terraced mountainside deep within the foothills of the Serra de Açor range in central Portugal. This is a protected landscape of deep river valleys, pine & eucalyptus forests and craggy peaks. It is also one of the remotest areas in Portugal and until the 1970s the only way to reach Piodão was on foot or by horse.
